It’s not every day you come across a fragrance with not one, but two launches under its belt, but Baccarat Rouge 540 is one such scent. Brought to us by renowned fragrance house Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Baccarat Rouge 540 first burst onto the scene in 2014, before enjoying a re-release in 2016.

Baccarat Rouge 540 bills itself as suitable for both men and women. Gender-neutral, non-binary, androgynous – all terms that have become more well-known and celebrated over recent years. I’m all for equality, but I’m always a little wary of unisex fragrances. Earning the same? Yes. Smelling the same? Hmmm, I’m not so sure!

I’ve heard good things about Maison Francis Kurkjian (the fragrance house has a reputation that exceeds itself), so I manage to put aside my petty bias and give Baccarat Rouge 540 a go. I’m glad I did.

The oriental floral fragrance features cedar – which is deep and intense. Derived from the bark of the tree, cedar is strong, with a woody bouquet that also has a tinge of sweetness about it.

There’s amber wood, which fashionistas might whoop about, as it’s bang on trend, and has featured in many a fragrance launch. I had misconceptions about this element – I’d heard amber wood was rather tobacco-like in smell (and that just didn’t appeal to me). However, rather than smoky, I noted a warm, and rather earthy tone.

How about a touch of sugar and spice? After all the old rhyme tells us that’s what little girls are made of. For the sugar, there’s the addition of jasmine, sweet and rich. We also have saffron, renowned as a spice, but providing a floral, honey-like hue, coupled with a fresh and somewhat grassy tang.

I have to admit this eclectic mix has turned my head (and changed my opinion). This fragrance offers sophistication and I feel resplendent wearing it. I never thought I would find a scent that I could share with my better half! For the record he liked Baccarat Rouge 540 too. Which is handy, as he will be getting a bottle for Christmas this year, and it will live in my half of the bathroom cabinet. Sharers never fail!
